Training session: Indian Revenue Service Officers

Among NALSAR Centre for Tax Laws’ core objectives include facilitating a dialogue between academia and the government. This includes assisting the Government in conducting training workshops for its officers as well. In furtherance of this objective, the Centre recently offered customized courses to the Indian Revenue Officer Trainees at the National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur.

Being the executive arm of the government, trainee officers are entrusted with the duty of implementing tax laws and also discharging adjudicatory and regulatory functions. In these globalizing times, it is expected of a modern-day Revenue Officer to understand the interplay between domestic tax laws and double tax avoidance agreements. It is therefore imperative that they comprehend the nuances of taxing statutes and also remain mindful of the ever-evolving developments in international taxation. A study of taxation is therefore not a bland technical exercise but requires engagement with larger questions of tax equity and justice.

This program offered its participants the opportunity to obtain an understanding of the conceptual and practical dimensions of domestic tax law; stay apace with global tax arrangements and the developments in international taxation and thereby acquire well-rounded expertise in law and policy of taxation.
